Auguest 2012 - THIS week's PICTURE

Dogwood Festival Fairground : Joiner photograph by Malcolm Aslett

I have lots of images from fairgrounds for this summer. All those belly-turning rides and curious constructions for three minutes of fun.

The forced perspective of this big wheel makes it rather a little one instead. Next to the 'fun house' it pales in comparison. The gory bright colours are dispatched and replaced by black and white to give continuity and, oddly enough for such a short time ago, a sense of nostalgia.

A construction like the big wheel would be a complicated and time consuming image in normal circumstances. Here I decided not to sweat it. After laying down the main parts more or less in sequence I merely extended or monkeyed about with the major discrepancies. The discrepancies in sky tone were dealt with harshly, firstly by filling the whole top area with the same colour (we just don't give skies sufficient attention to notice these things) and then tweeking only the blue layer in contrast and brightness.

Already seems like twenty years ago.
